Alcester is a market town dating back to Roman times at the junction of the River Alne and River Arrow in Warwickshire. It lies approximately 8 miles west of Stratford-upon-Avon, and 8 miles south of Redditch, close to the Worcestershire border. It is a significant town on the 100-mile-long Heart of England Way long-distance walking route. The town has architecture from the Medieval, Tudor, Georgian, Victorian eras and the 20th century. The oldest house is The Old Malthouse, probably dating from about 1500. St Nicholas's Church (Grade 2) houses the tomb of Fulke Greville, grandfather of Fulke Greville, 1st Baron Brooke. Alcester has two nearby stately homes. Coughton Court is the family seat of the Throckmorton baronets and a National Trust property. Ragley Hall is the home of the Marquis of Hertford and has gardens which contain a children's adventure playground. Kinwarton, just north of Alcester, is another National Trust property. Recent developments include 'Roman Alcester', a museum exhibiting locally found archaeological artifacts from the 1st to 4th century AD. Another place of note is Alcester’s Town Hall, which was built in 1620! Now held in trust for the people, it is an excellent venue to rent out for wedding receptions and celebrations.
